It is almost always a painful experience for Ohio parents who lose custody of a child or children after a divorce. The situation can seem grossly unfair, especially when a parent believes they have done everything right in raising the child. But it's also important to remember that a parenting agreement can be revisited in court, and that situations can change.
But one Ohio man will learn the hard way that taking the law into his own hands is not the way to go about having a grievance heard. The 23-year-old man is accused of kidnapping his 15-month-old child from the mother.
According to police, the man broke into the mother's home and put a knife to her throat before taking the child and leaving. Later that afternoon police located the man's car and then the child, who was safe and had been left with one of the man's relatives. The man was later found that same day and arrested.
Fortunately the woman escaped the altercation with only some cuts to her hand. Her attacker could be charged with felony domestic violence. It is not known if the mother and father were ever married or what the terms of the custody arrangement were.
And now instead of getting to see his child, the man will likely spend some time in prison or face a heavy fine if convicted. For Ohio parents who feel like their rights were not respected in a custody battle, consulting with a family law attorney could be a first good step toward modifying a custody arrangement. Forcefully taking a child only undermines one's case that they are a responsible parent.
